Freak Folk - a phenomenon of a different kind

What do Animal Collective, Paavoharju, Kiila, Espers, Islaja, Kuupuu, Lau Nau, Larkin Grimm, Feathers, Chalarambides, Kemialliset Ystävät, Wooden Wand, Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Espers, Larissa Nadler, Fursaxa, Avarus, Faun Fables, First Nation, Panda Bear & Avey Tare, Pumajaw, Apothecary Hymns, Al Green, Herman Düne, Regina Spector, Kimya Dawson, Diane Cluck, Jana Hunter, The Skygreen Leopard, Double Leopard and CocoRosie have in common?

These are all names of artists of whom could be said that they are in a closer or wider sense are part of the freak folk movement.
Freak folk is actually a very loose definition of music that varies from simple singer-songwriter acoustic guitar stuff to noisy and avant-garde-like experimental rock. Devendra Banhart and CocoRosie are the most famous deputees from an open music genre that actually has no borders. Everything that does make a sound is used creatively to experiment within the sounds of the universe. It's like a second generation movement of the 70s hippies, but more future-oriented and with a clear artistical main goal of making music together. Psychedelic and athmospherical drone background, avant-garde ideas and concepts, are often used to contribute to a proper sound. Either free singing or philosophic lyrics make every record to an unique world of music.

Since I fell in love with this music I have found many delightful and tasty records from which collection i'll every now and then publish here the cream of the crop of contemporary freak music.

A few good samples i'll already drop:

Mostly slow and mellow voices on dreamy guitar melodies...i love it.

CocoRosie

CocoRosie's sound is a really good sample of freaky folk with a beautiful timbre of dream castles and unicorns in a fantastic trance state. Human Beat Boxing, two very special female voices, electronic beats and instruments for children and even a harp are ear-catching gadgets for two cute ladies from the US.

I really recommend him to curious people who would love to discover freaky folk music. He has a special voice and an own style of songwriting. I really love it!
